Foundations of Healthy Sexuality: Clinical Care for Survivors of Childhood
Sexual Abuse
Presenter: Brent A. Satterly, PhD, LCSW, CSE
Human sexuality is one of the basic foundations for life. From before birth, individuals are sexed, gendered and bombarded with messages about who they are, who they should be and how they are expected to behave. Because sexuality is one of the central and organizing components of the human experience, sexual trauma in childhood can be especially problematic and debilitating for adults and children. This program will provide a comprehensive strengths-based model of human sexuality and development as a foundation for sound clinical care of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Helping survivors re-assess, reclaim, and re-norm their sexuality as part of their healthy personhood will be addressed.

An Ecosystemic Uniderstanding of Child Sexual Abuse
Anthony Goldsmith, MA
Child sexual abuse treatment is a specialized therapeutic approach to the traumatic symptoms that are caused by the experience of being molested. To fully understand the nature of child sexual abuse and its treatment, it is necessary to clearly define what it is (and isn’t), the legal aspects of child sexual abuse,
and how prevalent the problem is in our society. A broader look will include a review of the psychology of
offenders, the interaction between offenders and victims, and how that interaction informs approaches to treatment of children and adults who are survivors of sexual abuse. Defining treatment goals, along with methods to reach those goals, will be discussed. Finally, the impact on the therapist of engaging in child
sexual abuse treatment will be examined.

The Heart of the Matter: Concepts and Techniques of Child Sexual Abuse Psychotherapy
Constance Pelesh, MS, LPC, NCC, & Panel
The morning will focus on crucial aspects of the therapeutic environment that lead to successful treatment of child sexual abuse, regardless of theoretical approach or technique. Citing recent findings on brain changes after traumatic stress, management of the trauma experience in therapy will be discussed, with a particular emphasis on the role of dissociation. Case vignettes will be presented to illustrate these points. The afternoon panel of clinicians with specialized training in different techniques will compare these techniques to further elucidate how to bring about healing and health in the recovery process.

Lions and Tigers and Bears: The Multi-Systems Complexity of Child Sexual Abuse
Anthony Goldsmith, MA,
Mary Hove, MS, & Panel
Techniques to use with a child who discloses abuse will be reviewed, with an emphasis on encouraging expression while not leading the child, and ways to avoid questions that may contaminate an investigation. Child protective service (CPS) reporting scenarios will be used for illustration. The roles of various entities in child sexual abuse will be delineated,
including those of family members who face crises of their own. Parents who have experienced this trauma are included to help enhance the framework for healing. The unique intersystem coordination in Delaware County, PA allows us to bring together a panel from child welfare and the legal system for a lively and spirited discussion of the issues around investigation and prosecution.
